Your mindset dictates the kind of experiences you will have. Our outer world is a reflection of our internal conditions, so if you are feeling disappointed by how your life is going, then it means it is time to examine what’s going on in your mind. Our mindset is solidified in childhood, which means your experiences growing up have a lasting impact, and this can be really hard to change. As we move through life, our mindset evolves with it, but those childhood experiences create a pretty solid foundation. Because of this, it takes a lot of self awareness and conscious effort to reprogramme our mindset, but you will be very glad you did.
Step One: Identify your limiting beliefs
Pay attention to what you are avoiding and the negative thoughts you have. As you notice them, ask yourself where are they coming from? By getting to the root of the limiting beliefs, you can begin to change your narrative around them. Is it a belief you learnt from family, or did you assign it to yourself?
Step Two: Find examples of where your limiting beliefs aren’t true
Can you think of an example where the limiting belief you hold is untrue? By finding evidence, we can start to break down the limiting belief and let go of the stereotype altogether.
Step Three: Create a positive affirmation
Create a phrase or affirmation which is in opposition to the limiting belief. This will turn your negative belief into a positive one, and in time your mind will trust this positive belief. Whenever you find yourself thinking negatively or facing this negative belief, repeat your affirmation and in time the negative will be replaced by the positive.
These three steps are the most important ones to start shifting your mindset, however, there are a few other things which will help.
Remove toxicity from your life
It is always difficult to remain positive when there are negative people surrounding us or toxic situations. Identify where toxicity lies and find some ways to remove it or establish healthy boundaries. We can’t always remove toxic people, such as a negative family member, but we can create boundaries to protect us.
Be flexible
Be open to divine detours so that when the wind blows, you can bend rather than break. Sometimes our own rigidity can limit us or create unnecessary frustrations.
Find the lesson
Something not go to plan? No biggie, remember the rule about being flexible? However, the next step is to find what the lesson or hidden blessing it. I remind myself that everything happens for my highest good, and identify what that reason could be. When looking back on ‘mistakes’ or ‘missed opportunities’, I always see that there were reasons things happened the way that they did. This makes it easier to let go of frustration and remain flexible.
Find inspiration
Watch inspirational, motivating videos or connect with people who inspire you. There are small sparks of inspiration which surround us constantly. Find those sparks and you are guaranteed to feel happier and have a more positive mindset.
Attitude of gratitude
Every day, express gratitude for something. Being grateful and appreciative of what we have helps us see the good things, rather than the negative.
How do you create a more positive mindset? This is a process, so don’t worry if you find yourself slipping back into old mindset patterns. Just identify where they are coming from and endeavour to create those positive shifts again.
