Simplifying Synastry Charts

Have you ever thought it is a bit limited to restrict the romantic compatibility of a couple of their Sun Signs? In that case, your inkling was correct. The ultimate way to determine compatibility in Astrology is through the interpretation of a Synastry Chart. A Synastry Chart is the blueprint for romantic compatibility between two people. The strengths and weaknesses of a union will come across clearly in a Synastry Chart.

How do I make a Synastry Chart?

We’ll use www.astro.com to make a Synastry Chart. As the process can be a little bit tricky at first, we’ll take you through it step by step.

Once you have entered the website, enter “Draw Birth Chart” or “Free Chart” on the Search Bar located at the top of the website.

Choose this option:

Once you do, the site will give you the choice of either logging in to your existing account or using the website as a guest. In this case, we will use the website as a guest to accomodate for the people reading this article who don’t already have an account.

Now, you will either enter your own birth information or the information of the person you are interested in. Whoever’s birth information you decide to enter here will determine the ascendant for the whole Synastry.

In this case, we have decided to enter the birth data of John Lennon.

Once you’re done entering the information, press continue. If you are doing a Synastry Chart for a same sex couple, go to “show/hide extended settings”. This will appear:

The unmarked preference in the system is heterosexuality. In your case, you want to check the box that indicates partner reference to indicate that this person likes the same gender.

Once you click on “continue,” you’ll be taken to the individual birth chart of the first person. There, select “Add a New Person” to enter the birth data for the second individual.

You will be shown the same form you have already filled. Fill it with the information of the partner or romantic interest of the first person. In this case, we filled out the form with the birth data of Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s last wife.

We follow the same steps we have done before, and the second individual birth chart will appear. Now we’ll come back to the same Search Bar we used at the beginning, and we’ll type in “Draw Synastry Chart.”

We’ll be brought to this page:

In “Chart type,” we’ll browse through the options until we identify “PARTNER CHARTS.”

We’ll choose this option.

Make sure the right people appear in “Horoscope for” and “Partner,” and press “Click here to show the chart.” You’ll get something like this. It might look scary at first sight, but don’t be daunted.

The red lines symbolize hard aspects like a Square or an Opposition, whereas the blue lines represent more harmonious aspects, like a Trine. We’ll see those in detail later. The planets in Synastry Charts have a dialogue with each other in the form of aspects, which can be a positive one, if it is a harmonious aspect, or one filled with tension, but that can also represent a great opportunity for growth and learning.

The Big Three in Synastry Charts

You probably know that the Big Three in individual birth charts is made up of the Rising Sign, the Sun Sign and the Moon Sign. In Synastry Charts, the Big Three is made up of the Moon, Venus, and Mars. We focus on those and how they aspect any planets in the other person’s chart as they are considered the main motivating forces behind romantic love.

The Moon gives us information about how deserving of love we think we are, how much effort and time we tend to invest in relationships. It can also give us information about the emotional baggage of a person and any positive or negative patterns they may follow in relationships.

Venus represents a person’s beliefs, values and hopes about love. It is the way they want to love and experience being loved.

Finally, Mars is about conflict in a relationship, as well as sexual chemistry.

Aspects

Some major aspects to watch out for are the Conjunction, the Trine, the Square, and the Opposition.

A Conjunction happens when two planets are very close to each other. This makes them act as one. They create a powerful union of energy. It can be a positive or negative union depending on how compatible the two planets are with each other. The planets can become stronger or the energy can become something of a paradox.

The Trine is a harmonious aspect between planets on the same element. It is the smoothest flow of energy possible. The flip side of this aspect is that it can generate boredom and stagnancy.

The Square happens between planets located in signs with the same Modality. It represents tension, resistance, and difference. The conflicts of interest brought about by a Square can be overcome with a compromise, but these conflicts can also erode the relationship over time.

An Opposition, like the name suggests, happens when two planets stand on opposite sides of each other. This is a difference in core values. These differences are here to stay, and the best course of action is to accept them as inherent parts of the relationship.

Synastry Charts are not easy to interpret, but be patient. A lot of valuable information can be gained from the study of a Synastry. Here, we have laid down the building blocks for you to start studying Synastry Charts. We’ll delve more into possible aspects between planets in future blog posts.
